Irvine, Calif.-based Candelis Inc. has announced a new technology that provides radiologists, referring physicians, and patients with seamless, real-time access to diagnostic images and reports with the click of a button.

By improving workflow and doing away with the cumbersome and costly method of sharing images through CDs and DVDs, Candelis’ new cloud-hosted data services provoke a paradigm shift in the way the medical imaging community exchanges and shares information with referring physicians, specialists, surgeons, and Health Information Exchanges (HIEs), while revitalizing the revenue-building potential of imaging practices.

The Candelis Cloud platform leverages the company’s core competencies in clinical workflow, image management, and archiving to deliver industry-leading services via the Web.

“We believe that the methodologies and infrastructure underpinning today’s healthcare applications are inadequate,” says Steven Higgins, Candelis’ chief technology officer and vice president of engineering. “The evolution of cloud computing presents a unique opportunity to re-architect healthcare IT in a manner that better supports physicians, imaging centers, and hospitals in their efforts both to enhance patient care and control costs.”

The Candelis Cloud can receive images and reports from a hospital or imaging center PACS system and act as the universal access point for referring physicians, simultaneously alleviating load on the enterprise PACS infrastructure and addressing HIPAA requirements for the maintenance of redundant copies of imagery. Referring physicians are automatically notified when studies and reports are available for easy review with Candelis-provided toolsets.

By providing secure access to images and reports, the Candelis solution renders obsolete the archaic industry practice of transferring images by publishing them on CDs and DVDs. Existing studies on CDs and DVDs can be imported into Candelis Cloud accounts, and patients can grant access to primary care physicians and specialists of their choosing, eliminating the need for costly duplicate imaging procedures and eliminating delays when pursuing second opinions.

Candelis cloud-hosted services will reduce IT management costs, insulate centers from hardware obsolescence, and reduce capital outlays for expensive service and support contracts. Hospitals and imaging centers using Candelis’ suite of cloud-hosted services will benefit from technology advancements without costly and time-consuming hardware changes. In addition, the cloud-hosted applications can be accessed and launched via inexpensive workstations, further reducing IT costs.
Finally, Candelis’ commitment to industry standards protects hospitals, imaging centers, and referring physicians from proprietary lockdowns.
